New engine and structural laboratory for SINTEF and NTNU at Torgard in Trondheim. The engine lab is used to test alternative fuels and emerging technologies, with personal safety at the centre of the design. The volume is divided between lab cells, a social zone and a substantial support system, with extensive integration between services and the building shell. Simple principles and the ability to expand have been central to the design. An existing workshop hall in the neighbouring building has been converted into a structural laboratory with associated workshops, where the strength of large elements can be tested. Logistics and handling of test objects have been key drivers throughout.
