Lykkegården Trondheim

Lykkegården, located at Munkegata 48 in Trondheim, is a central and historic building with a long history and varying uses over the years. Originally, a large wooden farmhouse stood on the site, owned by merchant Ivar Knutsen Lykke (1790-1865). In 1971, this was demolished to make way for the current building, designed by architect Herman Krag in the mid-1970s. In 2013, Øystein Thommesen AS assisted in upgrading the existing facade.
The intention was to reshape the building in the spirit of Krag. Dark glass on steel brackets with service walkways behind were installed on top of the existing concrete slabs from the 2nd to 4th floors. The 1st floor received new natural stone cladding. A few years later, I K Lykke Eiendom wanted to look at the possibility of an extension. What the area would be used for had not yet been decided, but during the process it was decided that with its central location and excellent views of the fjord and the city in all directions, it should be publicly accessible. The extension consists of a sunken fifth floor with an associated roof terrace intended for use as a restaurant. The building’s austere architectural expression has been continued, with the use of glass in the facade and railings.
